The Broncos have already won 6 Swiss Bowls: 2003, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013. But they have not only dominated Switzerland but also won all European Top-Titles. In 2010 they won the EFAF-Cup. Two years later they took the crown of Europe by winning the Eurobowl dominating the Raiffeisen Vikings. In 2013 they were not able to repeat their victory when they lost in the semi finals against the Swarco Raiders.
In 2014 the Broncos will be a different team. Instead of using numerous imports the new head coach – Adam Rita – wants to put more emphasis on the domestic talent. In comparison to 2013 the Broncos play with 24 new players out of which 11 are from other teams.
Key players are QB Townsend James Cedric, Safety & Defensive Coordinator Stacey Thomas and Defensive End Bert Whigham. A lot of other talented players are also part of the team, including Runinng Back Sean Cooper or speedy wide receiver Christian Steffani. From the roster alone it is difficult to asses who will be able to play as some of the players on the roster are only listed to replace injured players.
Headcoach Adam Rita
Adam Rita has been coaching in Europe since 2011. He has been under contract with the Prague Black Panthers ever since but decided to coach for the Broncos in 2014.
Before he has coached in the Canadian Football league where he has won the CFL as head coach in 1991 with the Toronto Argonautes. As Offensive Coordinator and General Manager he was able to win five more titles. When he decided to retire from professional football in 2011 he decided to help building Football in Europe.
As long term goal Adam Rita wants to reach a quota of 90% domestic players in his team. While he is trying to change the team from the ground up, he still wants to keep it on the very top of Europe.
He wants to play an Offense with lots of different looks. Behind a massive offensive line he wants to establish a run game. An athletic QB with quick receivers should built on that base and bring an explosive factor into the game.
Townsend James Cedric
The new QB has extensive experience with European football. 2008-2009 he played for the Carlstadt Crusaders before he went to play from 2010 – 2013 for the Franken Knights in Germany, where he was a key factor in the upgrade of the Knights from GFL2 to GFL. In 2014 he plays for the Calanda Broncos.
He is a very mobile Quarterback and aside from very good pass stats he has also been one of the leading rushers of any team he has played for.
Stacey Thomas went to Texas Southern University (NCAA DIV IAA), where he was elected as All-American. After college he was able to play for the Buffalo Bills as undrafted free agent. After he was released from the NFL he went to Europe.
- 2007 Buffalo Bills,
- 2008/2009 Dauphins de Nice, France
- 2010-2012 Oulu Northern Lights, Finnland
- 2013 Seinajoki Crocodiles, Finnland
- 2014 Calanda Broncos
Stacey Thomas will play as defensive back / safety and will also be the DC for the Broncos.
Bert Whigham is a Defensive End / Tight End, who has played already one season in Europe. He started his football career at the Illinois State College. After graduation he went to the Arena Football League and played for the Orlanda Predators and then to the Badalona Dracs, Spain.
