This coming Saturday, May 17th, this year´s first and only double round will take place in the BIG6 European Football League, the competition in American football leading up to the Eurobowl XXVIII.
Group B: Calanda Broncos @ Berlin Adler
The first game will start at 6 p.m. in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Berlin. Online-Tickets Berlin Adler start into their first BIG6 game against the Calanda Broncos from Chur, Switzerland. The Broncos need a victory in order to keep a theoretical chance to advance to the finals alive. The Adler can eliminate the broncos from the championship race with a win.
The team from Chur has already experienced BIG6-atmosphere suffering a clear 14:70 loss in the BIG6 opening game against the Swarco Raiders Tirol in front of their own fans. The Broncos are in the middle of a transition phase that has also led to the first loss in a national game in five years. Mid week the Broncos surprisingly announced the departure of former Head Coach Adam Rita. In this situation the Broncos are a dangerous opponent as they may show a completely different system than in the games before.
For the Berlin Adler it is the first game in the BIG6 European Football League. In the GFL (German Football League) they have already played two games which could both be won. The anticipation, but also the tension by Berlin is rising as Headcoach Kim Kuci confirmed: “It is something special to play at this level. It will demand everything from us – coaches as well as players.”
Group A: Raiffeisen Vikings @ New Yorker Lions
The second game will start at 7 p.m. in Braunschweig at Eintracht-Stadion, Hamburger Straße Online-Tickets
This game is considered to be the top matchup of the BIG6 regular season games in 2014. The New Yorker Lions are able to clinch their spot in Eurobowl XXVIII with a win at home.
Both teams have collected a vast collection of championships. The Raiffeisen Vikings have won 12 national titles in the AFL and five Eurobowls. The New Yorker Lions in comparison have eight national titles in the GFL and two Eurobowls. Both teams have already met once in the 2003 Eurobowl competition. In a close game the Lions were able to take the 20:13 victory.
The Raiffeisen Vikings started well in the AFL (Austrian Football League) but have lost the last two games. They have suffered from a number of key injuries but have proven that while the replacements may not be able to win every game they are still able to deliver. In their first BIG6 game ever the Vikings want to prove that they are still on top of Europe.
The New Yorker Lions have already won their opening games in the BIG6 against the Dresden Monarchs with 17:10 and in the GFL against the Düsseldorf Panthers with 28:10. Troy Tomlin, Headcoach of the Lions, was not completely satisfied with the performance in those games. “The mistakes made against the Panthers must not happen again. Lack of concentration will be punished immediately by one of the best teams in Europe.”
Guest-coach Chris Calaycay agrees in almost identical tone: “After the defeat against Graz we must work hard to have a chance in Braunschweig. The weather conditions against Graz were very difficult, still the number of mistakes made it impossible to win. We have to play more disciplined. We are looking forward to the game in Braunschweig.”
Dinner is served for the double game day in the BIG6.
