The second game day of BIG6 European Football League has brought no decision on who will be able to enter Eurobowl XXVIII on July, 19th. The winners of both groups will be determined in the last round of the regular season.
In Group A the Raiffeisen Vikings beat the New Yorker Lions in front of 4.000 fans in Brunswick with 14:13. The game was dominated by both defenses. The Lions were very close to bringing the game into overtime but a blocked PAT was enough for Vienna to win the game.
Right from the start of the game it was clear that it would be a close game. In the first quarter the Vikings scored a touchdown with a pass of Christoph Gross to Wide Receiver Dominik Bubik (0:7). Just seconds before halftime the Lions answered with a short pass to David McCant (7:7).
After a quarter without points things got really interesting late in the fourth quarter. With five minutes on the clock the Vikings were able to score on a 40-yds pass from Christoph Gross to his favorite target of the day, WR Dominik Bubik. The Lions were not able to sustain the next drive and had to punt. The Vikings were one 1st down away from being able to kneel off. But the Lions Defense held and so the Vikings were forced to punt. David McCants returns the punt for a touchdown (13:14), putting hope back into the Lions and their great fans. Everybody in the stadium was convinced that the game would now go into overtime. But after a bad snap the PAT was blocked by the Vikings.
Group A can still be won by all contenders. If the Vikings win their game against Dresden on June 15th, they go to Eurobowl XXVIII. If Dresden wins with less than 14 points the New Yorker Lions will prevail. Dresden can also qualify as the finalist by winning with a margin of 14 points or more.
In group B the Berlin Adler eliminated the Clanda Broncos from the race for Eurobowl XXVIII with 42:20 in front of 5.000 enthusiastic fans. The Broncos started strong with a quick score but could not match Berlin in the rest of the game. With 4 touchdown passes Quarterback Darius Outlaw was the difference maker for Berlin.
During the first half the Broncos lost their star running back Andre Buford after a hard hit that also led the fumble of the ball. This was a momentum change for the whole game. Daniel Zinsli, General Manager of the Broncos, stated after the game that this loss was crucial for their team and handicapped them considerably.
In the second half the Adler were able to extend their lead with one more touchdown in the third quarter. The Broncos were able to score twice during the fourth quarter but the small hope to narrow the game was eradicated by a kick off return touchdown of Conrad Meadows.
Kim Kuci Headcoach of the Berlin Adler felt that Conrad Meadows had a very good game but also that the game showed where the Adler still need to improve.
For the Broncos the BIG6 European Football League is over for this year. The winner of the last game, Berlin Adler vs. Swarco Raiders, will proceed to Eurobowl XXVIII.
