The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns have reached the Eurobowl for the first time in their history. The guests won the final group game in the group A of the BIG 6 with a surprisingly clear 23:45-victory in Vienna (7:21/3:10/0:14/13:0).
In front of 3,200 spectators in the stadium Hohe Warte the domestic Vikings missed to reach the eleventh final appearance and the possible sixth title. This was mainly due to the completely muffed first quarter, in which the Unicorns took a fast 21:0-lead. It took less than a minute for the guests to celebrate the leadership. After a quick loss of ball possession of the Vienna Vikings it took not long until Patrick Donahue caught a pass from quarterback Marco Ehrenfried in the end zone.
After that Christian Rycraw grabbed another touchdown pass before the wide receiver himself found Felix Brunner with a pass in the opponent end zone. The initial phase was the key of the game also for Vienna Head Coach Chris Calaycay: “We started badly today. Three touchdowns against us in the first five minutes must not happen to us and have naturally made the game even harder. It was not one of my best days. We are, unfortunately, not able to come into the game, also due to the strong opponent. Congratulations to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and to our friend Jordan Neuman. They played very well and did a good job.”
Vienna came back in the first quarter through with a touchdown of Dominik Bundschuh, but the Unicorns built up their lead in the second quarter. It was already 10:33 at halftime and would be higher when Hall´s kicker Thomas Rauch did not miss a field goal attempt from 55 yards, hitting only the post from this long distance.
The dominance of the guests continued in the third quarter. The defense allowed the Vikings no further points, while the offense scored with two more touchdowns by Moritz Bohringer and Stephan Mertsching each after passes of Marco Ehrenfried. Siegfried Gehrke, Head Coach of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns: “The defense of the Vikings had our running game well under control. In the passing game we were ahead. This also applies to our defense, which made a very solid game apart from the hangover after the break.”
The Vikings showed morale and won at least the last quarter with 13:0 by two touchdowns of Manuel Thaler and Maurice Wappel.
With one victory and one loss the Vienna Vikings occupy the second place in group A. In the Eurobowl XXIX, which will take place at the weekend of 20th/ 21st of June, it will be the new edition of last year’s German Bowl, which the New Yorker Lions won clearly 47:9 against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Hall´s Head Coach Siegfried Gehrke is looking forward to the game. “This is the chance for revenge!”
